Have you ever had second thoughts on using a computer or a mobile device because you were so afraid you might break it?
Did you know there is a term used for the fear of technology? That’s right, “Technophobia” has been around for quite some time now and has affected so many people in the last century.

Technological
advancement is a blessing. It makes our lives easier and more convenient. Without
it, the world wouldn’t be as round as it is. Yet some people fail to see the magnificence
of technology. To some, these things only benefit those who clench it early, and
because of this, gain advantages over those who do not. Though technology is in
the brink of advancement and an integral part of the community, this stimulates
a division between those who know how to use a computer, and those who know how
to break it.
With
this, a lot of people are very afraid to even touch anything that has something
to do with technology. A lot of people think of these advancements as curse.
Those people wish to stop the ever advancing technology even without
considering the advantages and disadvantages of technology If not, what could
people who are afraid of technology ever do? And more importantly, why do
people fear technology?
Technology has its advantages and disadvantages. Technology is usually developed with the
idea that it will make something easier. But, that amazing and high-tech smart phone
that allows you access the internet, incredibly useful apps and connects you
with the world, well, also allows the Government to track everything about you.
Deep in the back of our minds, we are truly nervous. Technophobia is taking over. Technology Myths and legends are formed. We are struggling to
survive, trying to make it through one more day of access to foolish services
like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or SnapChat. But, it would be very foolish to
fear all technological progress, instead being wary of overall risky things and
blindly accepting everything new is perfectly rational.
Some
people fear, then reject, technology because they have used it and don’t enjoy
it. People who fear technology will usually avoid using it in their personal
lives and because of this, will have no opportunity outside of work to become
more skilled at it. This will then reflect in their day jobs where they choose
to manually do tasks instead of using technology. People are free to reject the
use of technology at their very home, however, when we talk about work and
office, it is often out of their hands whether they will use technology, since
some tasks require the use of technological devices.
Surely nothing beats computerized records when it comes to efficiency and convenience. In an organization, changes being implemented that involve the use of the “tools and gears” of technology can therefore be discouraging to people who are not acquainted with it. One of the main factors of Technophobia is that they do not trust technological advancement. People can be very judgemental and so if technology isn’t perfect and fool proof instantly then it gets a bad reputation.

Another
factor on why are some people afraid of technology is that they often fear
failure. This is specifically true if they are very effective and competent in
the way they work now, manually writing and filing all work with hand copies
and paperworks. Let’s face it, no one really wants to appear incompetent in
their job. No one really wants to be trained again and carry out their role in a
whole different way. They might not be able to adapt that quickly, and
therefore, they fear that they will not be that as effective as before.
They are intimidated by technology’s complexity. Many of the people who hate new technologies believe that they are too complex to be learned. Those people usually fear technologies because of not being sure whether they will be able to use them or not, and later, might broke it.
It is clear that there are genuine reasons why people fear technology, both in work and home. Those that fear technology in their personal lives are more likely to reject it in work because they do not have the trust in it. It is generally a fear of the unknown, which arguably can be reduced by giving workers more information.

The
older generation is slowly coming around to technology. Our grandparents are
starting to get Facebooks and iPads, which means we'll soon be sitting around
to teach them. My point is, technology is not something to be feared. Technophobia should not cause any alarm or panic. In fact, it's something that should be celebrated. We've come so
far, and it's only going to get bigger from here. Besides, a technologist aims
and promises user-friendliness in the coming years. So why be afraid?
